Size: around 2.5″

The Royal Farlowella is very peaceful and is compatible with most other non-aggressive fish and invertebrates.  It is possible that larger specimens might eat very small dwarf shrimp, particularly their fry.  However, many aquarists keep the Royal Farlowella with their shrimp colonies with no problems.  The Royal Farlowella can reach a length of 8 inches, but it is a very thin fish that does not account for the bioload that many thicker fish of a similar length produce.

Water Conditions:

  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C) for the Royal Farlowella.
  • pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.5 and 7.5.
  • Water Hardness: They prefer moderately hard to slightly soft water with a hardness of 5 to 12 dGH.
  • Filtration: Provide efficient filtration to maintain water quality and ensure proper oxygenation.

Tank Mates:

  • Peaceful Community Fish: Royal Farlowella Whiptail Catfish are peaceful and can coexist with a variety of fish species, including peaceful community fish like tetras, rasboras, and peaceful cichlids.
  • Avoid Aggressive or Nippy Fish: It's best to avoid aggressive or nippy species that may stress or damage the delicate fins of the Royal Farlowella.

Feeding Habit:

  • Herbivorous Diet: The Royal Farlowella primarily feeds on algae and plant matter. Provide a diet rich in vegetable-based foods such as spirulina flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), and occasional fresh greens like spinach or kale.
  • Supplementation: Supplement their diet with protein-rich foods such as sinking pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, or bloodworms to ensure a balanced nutrition.

Care:

  • Hiding Places: Provide plenty of hiding places in the aquarium with driftwood, rocks, or caves. The Royal Farlowella appreciates secure hiding spots and will often rest on vertical surfaces.
  • Substrate: Use fine sand or smooth gravel as the substrate to prevent any damage to the delicate underside of the catfish.
  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Royal Farlowella. Provide larger tanks for multiple individuals or if housing with other fish.
  • Water Changes: Perform regular partial water changes of about 20% every 1-2 weeks to maintain water quality and promote a healthy environment.
  • Behavior: Royal Farlowella Whiptail Catfish are peaceful and prefer to swim near the bottom of the tank. They are excellent algae eaters, making them beneficial for keeping the tank clean.
