Amazonian Leaf Litter

MYR 0.00

Bundle Description

Beneath the surface of the Amazon's flooded forest floor, a different world unfolds. Accumulated leaves slowly decompose in warm, dark water, creating a rich microhabitat of tannins, biofilm, and tiny invertebrates that sustains an entire community of small fish. It is one of the most ecologically fascinating — and visually distinctive — biotopes you can recreate in an aquarium.

Dwarf Cichlids (Apistogramma and related species) are the stars of the leaf litter biotope — males are brilliantly coloured and engage in elaborate courtship and territorial displays among the fallen leaves. Pencilfish hover elegantly in the mid-upper layers, their subtle markings and calm demeanour adding refinement to the setup. Corydoras catfish forage through the leaf layer at the bottom, turning over debris and keeping the substrate healthy. Cardinal Tetras provide the schooling midwater element, their vivid colours making a stunning contrast against the brown leaf substrate. Dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, or catappa), driftwood, and soft acidic water complete the biotope.
