Cara Cuci Akuarium: Cleaning Glass, Gravel & Decor the Right Way

The best cara cuci akuarium is not to empty the tank and scrub everything. That wipes out the good bacteria and is one of the most common ways Malaysian beginners lose fish. Instead, clean a little every week: scrape the glass, siphon the gravel while you remove 20–30% of the water, rinse decor in old tank water, and refill with dechlorinated water at a similar temperature. Clean the filter separately, and never use soap, detergent or Clorox on anything that goes in the tank.

Why You Shouldn't Do a Full Strip-Down

Your tank's beneficial bacteria live on the filter media, gravel, glass and decor. They turn toxic ammonia from fish waste into less harmful nitrate. If you drain the tank, wash the gravel under the tap and scrub everything clean, most of that bacteria disappears. When the fish go back in, ammonia builds up within days and fish get sick or die. Our beneficial bacteria guide explains why this colony matters.

A full strip-down is only worth doing after a disease wipe-out, a serious contamination (for example insect spray getting into the tank) or when moving house.

Tools You Need

Tool Use
Gravel siphon / vacuum Removes waste from the substrate while draining water
Algae scraper or magnet cleaner Cleans the inside glass without getting your hands wet
Clean bucket (aquarium only) For draining and refilling; never used with soap
Soft brush / old toothbrush Scrubbing decor and rocks
Fish net Removing fish or floating debris
Anti klorin Treat new tap water
Towel Mopping spills

Cara Cuci Akuarium: Weekly Routine (30–45 Minutes)

1. Switch off equipment

Unplug the heater (if you use one) and filter before the water level drops. Heaters can crack if they run out of water.

2. Clean the glass first (cara cuci cermin akuarium)

Scrape the inside glass with a magnet cleaner or algae scraper before siphoning, so the loosened algae gets removed with the water.

  • Use a plastic blade on acrylic tanks; metal blades scratch.
  • Keep sand and gravel out of the magnet cleaner, or it will scratch the glass.
  • For hard white lime scale above the waterline, wipe with a cloth dampened in a little white vinegar, then rinse well. Don't let vinegar drip into the tank in quantity.
  • Clean the outside glass with a damp microfibre cloth. Avoid glass sprays near the tank; their fumes and drips are harmful to fish.

3. Siphon the gravel (how to clean fish tank gravel)

Start the siphon and push it into the gravel. Waste rises up the tube while gravel falls back. Move section by section until you have removed 20–30% of the water.

  • Sand: hover the siphon just above the surface instead of pushing in.
  • Planted areas: siphon lightly around roots or skip them.
  • Aqua soil: avoid digging; just clean the surface.

4. Clean decor if needed

Take out only the dirtiest pieces, scrub them in a bucket of the old tank water with a soft brush, and put them back. Rinse artificial plants the same way.

5. Refill

Fill a clean bucket with tap water, add anti klorin for the full volume, and try to match the tank temperature roughly by feel or thermometer. Pour slowly onto a plate or your hand to avoid stirring up substrate. Our water change guide covers this in more detail.

6. Switch everything back on

Restart the filter and heater, check the filter is running smoothly, and look at the fish for a few minutes.

Cleaning the Filter (Separate Day)

Don't clean the filter on the same day as a big gravel clean. Spread them out so the bacteria colony is never hit twice at once.

  • Rinse sponges and media in a bucket of old tank water, never under the tap.
  • Squeeze sponges until they're no longer clogged, not until they're spotless.
  • Replace only part of the media at a time.
  • Most filters need a rinse every 2–4 weeks; check when flow slows down.

What Never to Use

Never use Why
Soap, dishwashing liquid, detergent Residue kills fish and bacteria even in small amounts
Clorox / bleach (undiluted, or without rinsing) Highly toxic; only for special disinfection, followed by thorough rinsing and dechlorination
Glass cleaner sprays Ammonia and chemicals are harmful
Insect spray or air freshener near the tank Can poison fish through the water surface
Hot tap water on acrylic Can warp it
Metal scourers on acrylic Scratches

Monthly and Occasional Tasks

  • Trim plants and remove dead leaves.
  • Clean the lid and light cover so light reaches the water.
  • Check tubing and hoses for slime build-up.
  • Test water (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH) monthly, or whenever fish act strangely.
  • Clean the impeller of filters and pumps every few months.

Malaysian Conditions That Affect Cleaning

  • Heat speeds everything up: in a tank at 28–31°C, uneaten food rots faster and algae grows quickly. Weekly cleaning matters more than in cooler countries.
  • Evaporation: top up with dechlorinated water between water changes. Topping up doesn't replace water changes, because minerals build up.
  • Chlorinated tap water: always use anti klorin when refilling.
  • Sunlight: if algae grows fast on one side of the glass, the tank may be getting sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berapa kerap perlu cuci akuarium?

Should I take the fish out to clean the tank?

No. For routine cleaning, leave the fish in. Removing them causes more stress than the cleaning itself.

How do I clean a very dirty fish tank?

Do it in stages over two to three weeks: one 30% water change and partial gravel siphon each few days, rather than one big clean. This avoids shocking fish with sudden changes.

How do I remove white marks on aquarium glass?

Those are mineral deposits from evaporation. Wipe with a cloth and a little vinegar above the waterline, or use a plastic scraper, then rinse.
