Product Description

The Peacock Bass Orinoco (Cichla orinocensis), also known as the Orinoco Peacock Bass, is a remarkable and sought-after species of freshwater fish that's highly admired for its vibrant coloration and impressive size. Native to the Orinoco River basin in South America, particularly in Venezuela and Colombia, these fish are a favorite among experienced aquarists and sport anglers alike. Let's explore the key features, care requirements, and considerations for keeping Peacock Bass Orinoco in your aquarium:

Appearance:

Stunning Coloration: Peacock Bass Orinoco exhibits vibrant hues of green, yellow, and blue, which intensify as they mature. They often display an eye-catching "eyespots" pattern on their caudal fins.
Size: These fish can grow to substantial sizes, reaching lengths of around 24 inches (60 cm) or more, making them suitable for larger aquarium setups.

Behavior:

Predator Behavior: Peacock Bass Orinoco are apex predators, known for their active hunting and feeding habits. They are highly territorial and can be aggressive towards other fish.

Tank Setup:

Tank Size: Provide a spacious tank of at least 150 gallons (567 liters) to accommodate their size and territorial nature.
Substrate and Decor: Use sandy substrate and include hiding spots using rocks, caves, and driftwood. Open swimming areas are essential as well.
Strong Filtration: Efficient filtration is crucial to manage their waste production and maintain water quality.

Feeding Habit:

Carnivorous Diet: Offer a diet primarily consisting of live or frozen foods like feeder fish, fish fillets, shrimp, and other meaty offerings.
Enrichment: Incorporate occasional live prey to mimic their natural hunting behaviors.

Water Parameters:

Temperature: Maintain the water temperature between 75°F and 84°F (24°C to 29°C).
pH Level: Aim for a neutral to slightly acidic pH level between 6.5 and 7.5.
Water Hardness: Provide moderate to slightly hard water with a hardness level between 5 and 15 dGH.

Care:

Tankmates: Due to their aggressive and territorial nature, it's best to keep them alone or with larger, similarly aggressive fish in a large, species-specific setup.
Enrichment: Incorporate hiding spots and create a dynamic environment to encourage their natural behaviors.
