Product Description

Ōpae ʻula shrimp (Halocaridina rubra), also known as Hawaiian red shrimp or volcano shrimp, are tiny brackish-water shrimp native to Hawaii. They are found naturally in anchialine pools, which are coastal pools connected to the ocean through underground lava-rock channels.

Key facts:

  • Size: About 1 to 1.5 cm (around 0.5 inch).
  • Color: Usually bright red/pale red - but appear transparent when stress
  • Lifespan: Often 15-20 years, which is exceptionally long for such a small shrimp.
  • Diet: Mainly algae, biofilm, bacteria, and other microscopic organic matter.
  • Habitat: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and commonly found in anchialine pools.

They are popular in low-maintenance aquariums because they are hardy and can live in stable brackish setups with minimal intervention.

Easiest shrimp to keep by far!

- Don't require much feeding as long as algae is present

- Water changes aren't needed

- Don't need plants

- Don't need much filtration
