• Overview & Appearance: The Choco Zebra VT is a selectively bred Veil Tail Betta splendens prized for its rich chocolate-brown base colour, broken by bold, dark zebra-style vertical banding across the body and fins. Reaching a compact adult size of just 3–4 cm, this variety makes an outstanding centrepiece for a nano or desktop aquarium, yet it carries all the personality and attitude of a full-sized betta. The "VT" designation refers to its veil tail genetics — long, flowing, veil-like finnage that drapes elegantly behind the fish as it swims. Males display the deepest colouration and the most dramatic fin extension, flaring their gill covers and spreading their fins when they feel territorial or when they spot their own reflection. Because those long fins are delicate, they are easily torn by sharp ornaments, rough substrate or powerful filter intakes, so plan the aquascape with soft, rounded decor and gentle water movement. With correct care, this is a hardy, long-lived fish that can reward you with three to five years in the aquarium.
• Water Conditions: As a blackwater-loving species, the Choco Zebra VT thrives in soft, acidic water. Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, with 6.4–6.8 being the sweet spot, and keep general hardness (GH) low at 2–10 dGH with carbonate hardness (KH) around 1–5. Temperature should be held stable between 24–28°C (75–82°F) — a quality heater is essential, as this fish tolerates warmth far better than a cold snap. Ammonia and nitrite must always read zero, and nitrates should stay below 20 ppm, so a fully cycled, mature filter is non-negotiable. Adding Indian almond leaves, alder cones or driftwood releases tannins that gently lower pH, soften the water and mimic the betta's natural habitat, which typically boosts colour intensity and immune health. Because this variety dislikes hard, alkaline water, always acclimatise new arrivals using a slow drip method over 45–60 minutes. Consistency matters more than chasing a perfect number: stable parameters will always outperform fluctuating ones.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Semi-aggressive by nature, the Choco Zebra VT is territorial rather than a relentless killer, and it can live peacefully in a well-planned community tank with the right companions. Never house it with another betta — male or female — as fighting is almost certain. Avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, serpae tetras and some danios, which will shred the veil tail, and steer clear of guppies, whose bright, flowing fins trigger aggression. Excellent tank mates include kuhli loaches, corydoras, otocinclus, nerite and mystery snails, and peaceful mid-water schooling fish such as harlequin rasboras, chili rasboras and ember tetras kept in groups of six or more. Amano shrimp are usually safe with a mature betta, though smaller cherry shrimp may be hunted as snacks. Always introduce the betta last, after tank mates are settled, and provide dense planting, caves and driftwood sight breaks so any bullying is diffused. A tank of 40 litres or more makes peaceful cohabitation far easier than a tiny bowl.
• Feeding Habits: The Choco Zebra VT is a carnivorous insectivore with a small stomach and a big appetite, so portion control is everything. Offer a high-protein staple such as quality betta pellets — two to four pellets, twice daily — and soak them for five minutes before feeding to prevent bloating and constipation. Vary the diet with frozen or live foods including bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mysis shrimp and blackworms; this variety shows noticeably better colour, fin condition and spawning behaviour on a varied menu. Frozen foods should be thawed and rinsed before use, and live foods make an excellent weekly treat. Feed only what the fish can consume within two minutes, and remove any uneaten food promptly to protect water quality. A single weekly fasting day helps clear the digestive tract, and daphnia acts as a natural laxative if constipation occurs. Avoid beef heart, fatty mammalian meats and exclusive freeze-dried diets, which can cause serious digestive issues. As adults are only 3–4 cm, a few oversized meals can be genuinely dangerous.
• Care Requirements: Give your Choco Zebra VT a minimum of 20 litres (5 gallons) for a single specimen, though 40 litres or more is strongly recommended for stable water chemistry. Use a gentle filter — a sponge filter or a canister with a baffled outlet — because heavy current exhausts a veil-tailed betta and damages its fins. Fit a tight lid, as bettas are accomplished jumpers and the extra weight of long fins makes escape easier than you would expect. Perform a 25–30% water change weekly using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water, and test parameters regularly with a liquid test kit. Stock the tank with live or silk plants and smooth driftwood, and cover the filter intake with a sponge to protect trailing finnage. Moderate lighting for 8–10 hours daily keeps algae in check without stressing the fish. Quarantine all new arrivals for two to four weeks, and watch for fin rot, ich, velvet and swim bladder disorders, which are best treated early with clean water and an appropriate remedy. With stable water, warm temperatures and a varied diet, this betta is a hardy, captivating addition to any low-pH planted setup.
