FishyHub and Imperial Arowana: Connecting Breeding Expertise with Technology
Behind every arowana is a story that a photograph alone cannot tell. Its breeding lineage, the care it receives and the people responsible for raising it all contribute to that story.
During Shiqing’s visit to Imperial Arowana Breeding Farm, we had the pleasure of meeting Aaron Sim and learning more about the farm’s approach to arowana breeding, husbandry and traceability. The visit offered a closer look at its breeding programme, daily operating procedures and the systems used to document and manage its fish.
It also brought together two complementary strengths: Imperial Arowana’s experience in breeding and husbandry, and FishyHub’s focus on technology and connectivity within the aquatic industry.
Behind the Scenes with Aaron Sim and Imperial Arowana
For hobbyists, the most visible aspects of an arowana are often its colour, body shape and movement. At the farm, our conversation extended to the work that takes place long before a fish reaches its future owner.
Aaron Sim and the Imperial Arowana team shared the farm’s approach to selective breeding, genetics, DNA profiling and traceability. They explained how breeding lines are carefully managed and documented, with the aim of maintaining the characteristics and pedigree of the individual lines they work with.
Daily standard operating procedures were another important part of the visit. Alongside breeding decisions, consistent husbandry and detailed records help provide continuity across the care of the fish.
For FishyHub, understanding these processes gives valuable context to the animals people discover through an online platform. A listing can introduce a fish; the knowledge behind it helps a hobbyist ask better questions.
Why Traceability Matters to Arowana Keepers
Choosing an arowana is a long term commitment. Beyond its appearance today, hobbyists may want to understand its background, how it has been raised and what to expect as it develops.
Traceability and documented breeding information can make those conversations more meaningful. They provide a basis for discussing a fish’s origins and lineage, while allowing breeders to explain the work behind their breeding programmes.
During the visit, Imperial Arowana described how documentation supports its approach to managing breeding lines and minimising unnecessary dilution of their genetics.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: ask about the fish’s history as well as its appearance. Understanding what information is available and what it tells you is an important part of making an informed choice.
Where FishyHub’s Technology Can Help
FishyHub connects aquarium hobbyists and aquatic businesses through a digital platform, bringing together product discovery, information and access to sellers.
Our contribution to this partnership comes from our experience in programming, digitalisation and building connections across the aquatic industry, serving both businesses and individual hobbyists.
We see an opportunity for technology to make specialist knowledge easier to discover and understand. That could mean helping hobbyists learn more about a breeder’s approach, presenting product information more clearly or making it easier for interested buyers to reach the right business.
These are areas we look forward to exploring together. The starting point is understanding the farm’s existing practices and identifying where digital tools can provide practical value.
A Partnership Built on Shared Knowledge
Imperial Arowana brings breeding expertise and practical experience caring for its fish. FishyHub brings technology capabilities and a platform connecting businesses with hobbyists.
Our shared ambition is to help people make more informed decisions and create stronger connections across the aquatic community. That begins with open conversations, a willingness to share knowledge and respect for the expertise each partner brings.
The visit was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas about how breeding knowledge and technology can support each other. It also reinforced the importance of understanding the people and processes behind the fish we see online.
Looking Ahead Together
A special thank you to Aaron Sim and the Imperial Arowana team for welcoming Shiqing, opening their doors and sharing the knowledge, care and discipline behind their breeding programme.
We look forward to building on this strategic partnership and bringing more of these insights to the FishyHub community.
