Symphyllia Brain Coral, Red

The Symphyllia Red Brain Coral is a fantastic colored variety of the large polyp stony (LPS) coral also referred to as the Closed Brain Coral or the Dented Brain Coral. This beautiful coral is closely related to the popular Lobophyllia Open Brain Corals and is found in a variety of textures and color forms. Some are smooth, while others are pimply, and look like carpet. Symphyllia Brain Corals are naturally found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, typically occurring in a range of habitats from protected reef slopes in shallow water to upper reef slope regions, as well as fringing reefs. Though sharing similar appearance and relative care requirements to Lobophyllia corals, Symphyllia Brain Corals make less frequent appearances in the aquarium industry, making them a fantastic choice for LPS coral aficionados.

Caring for the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral is relatively easy, making it an excellent choice for the beginner to expert hobbyist. The Red Symphyllia Brain Coral requires moderate to high lighting conditions achieved by T-5s, powerful LEDs or the more intense metal halides combined with moderate water movement within the aquarium. For continued good health, the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral will benefit from the addition of calcium, strontium, iodine, magnesium and trace elements to the water column.

Though less aggressive than Lobophyllia corals, the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral is still semi-aggressive and will extend its sweeper tentacles at night well beyond the base, potentially stinging other species of corals and animals within reach. Therefore, it is important to leave ample space between the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral and neighboring corals.

The photosynthetic symbiotic zooxanthellae algae hosted within the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral satisfies the majority of its nutritional requirements. However, the Red Symphyllia Brain Coral will benefit from supplemental feedings in the form of micro-plankton or baby brine fed twice per week in the evening while its tentacles are visible.
